The endangered bird was chosen after a two-week campaign led by British-American comedian and political commentator John Oliver. Oliver's campaign began after he learned about the contest and unsuccessfully searched for a similar one in the U.S.. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Oliver wore a puteketeke costume to mimic the bird's crest
