The pūteketeke Australasian crested grebe, also known as the "puking" bird, won New Zealand's "Bird of the Century" poll in November 2023. The endangered bird was chosen after a two-week campaign led by British-American comedian and political commentator John Oliver. Oliver's campaign began after he learned about the contest and unsuccessfully searched for a similar one in the U.S.. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Oliver wore a puteketeke costume to mimic the bird's crest
